The Humongous Humdingle Family and the Tiny House
Coming February 2025
Things are a bit squashy and noisy in the Humdingle family home, with three generations living under one tiny roof. It’s easy to see why they sometimes wish they didn’t have to share quite so much.
But when their wishes are granted, perhaps they’ll find that there was something special about living in their tiny house after all.
A vibrant story about minimalism, multi-generational living, family connections and the importance of appreciating what we have.
Illustrated by P.J. Reece, The Humongous Humdingle Family and the Tiny House is available for pre-order now from EK Books.

Children need to read
What I know about reading
Reading and writing is part of modern survival. It provides for self-esteem and self-actualisation. Books and reading together should be a warm and comforting place to be for children. The world opens up for children when they learn to read!
The research shows that self-esteem and confidence come from literacy skills and being able to have their voice heard. Reading and writing helps kids to make sense of their world and promotes empathy with others. Kids who can see themselves in literature feel validated and seen, and it makes their schooling journey easier.
To help teachers and parents make this happen for their children, I run done-for-you workshops that inspire a love of reading and literature.

Create lovers of literature in your classroom
Classroom workshops with Michelle Wilson
As teachers, we’re all very aware of how critical literacy is to future success in adult life. The first five years of reading and connection with caregivers through story is critical. Once children enter school, it’s crucial that they learn the skills to express themselves and engage with the ever-increasing literacy demands of modern life.
The problem is that there’s a lot getting in the way of enriching experiences with literacy in our young people.
“It’s too hard!”
“I can’t do it!”
“Books are boring!”
We’ve all heard the refrain. But everyone deserves to be able to read and write. To Express themselves. To tell their story. To be creative.
As a teacher I know how hard it is to find or create experiences for kids that make literacy fun (while still meeting curriculum requirements). I am convinced that there is “the right story” out there for every disengaged reader: the one that opens up a love of reading. The challenge is finding the time in the busy school day to make that happen for every student.
That’s why I have created unique workshops to make it easier for teachers to enrich the curriculum with reading and writing. It’s an easy, fun, humour-filled way to support your students.

Workshop Option 1
Life as an Author
Kids love to know the ins and outs of how a book gets made. In this 1-2 hour workshop, I lift the lid on the publishing process from the beginning to the end. From where ideas come from, the importance of early feedback, writing a pitch, researching publishers, to what happens once a publisher says that magic word, ‘YES’!
I talk about how the illustrator is selected, what decisions are made by the author, and what the author does once the book is on the shelves.
This is well suited for the upper primary year levels, however it can be adjusted for lower primary students as well.
This workshop inspires young writers to hold onto their dreams, not be afraid to fail, trust in the process and never give up.
Workshop Option 2
Writing Your Own Story
I believe the best stories come from a place deep within a writer’s own heart. Everyone has an interesting story to tell. We all have our own unique voice, experiences, and thoughts. If we feel confident to put these down onto the page, there’s a magic that happens. Our writing feels purposeful, meaningful and relatable.
Finding and developing your own unique voice and writing style will help your scenes feel real, your characters and their struggles believable, and your text bounce to life.
In this workshop I present tips and tricks on how to tease this out of young writers and how to unlock their own stories and characters.
This hands-on writing workshop teaches the mechanics of writing and leaves students energised and excited to get going with their stories.

Workshop Option 3
Mindful Storytime
This session is designed for the earlier years. I am passionate about helping kids develop mindful techniques which aim to reduce stress and anxiety while also building confidence and resilience.
This workshop is an energetic and engaging session that introduces kids to the many benefits of yoga and mindfulness through storytime and playfulness. It gives educators tips on how to integrate mindfulness into the classroom and strategies kids can use to stay regulated throughout the day.
About my background and experience
About Michelle Wilson
As a teacher myself I have been in that position trying to fit everything in, create positive experiences, in a very short time. I’ve worked with disengaged readers to find “their story:” the one that opens up a love of reading for them.
I have a Ba of Communications (Journalism & PR) and a Grad Dip Ed (Primary). I’m a practising and registered classroom teacher holding a current Blue Card Exemption. As a supply teacher I am experienced making a meaningful connection with whoever I have in front of me on a given day.
As a parent of three children myself, I know the struggle of screentime and finding time in the day to have quality literacy moments together.
I’m also the author of the best-selling children’s book Crocs Don’t Do Yoga, which has sold over 3000 copies. I can’t wait to work with your young people to inspire a love of reading and writing!
For the love of literature,
Michelle
